Hearing Aids Keep Your
brain YOUNG.
How is hearing linked to the brain?
Sound is picked up by our outer ear & funneled through the ear system until it hits the inner ear(the snail-shaped cochlea).
The little hair cells that line our inner ear receive this signal and interpret it as a high or low frequency.. a soprano or a bass.
The inner ear then sends this sound signal to the Auditory Nerve in the brain .
The brain is responsible for making sense of this sound signal; for instance, turning a myriad of frequencies into speech.
Our inner ear is slowly damaged throughout our entire lives, simply by sound hitting it.
When we live with a hearing loss… the inner ear is unable to send the sound to the Auditory nerve in the brain.. allowing the nerve to become weak from inactivity.
Over time the Auditory nerve begins to atrophy from lack of signal, meaning the brain is not receiving the signal either.
Nerves, like muscles, need exercise to stay strong. Waiting too long to treat hearing loss can lead to Auditory nerve damage.
If this happens, hearing aids will get the sound to the brain, but the brain will not be able to interpret that sound into speech.
If you don’t use it, you lose it.
Increased Risk of Health & Wellness Decline When Not Wearing Hearing Aids
Study carried out by a team at the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research
The Study followed 3,777 people over the age of 65 for 20 years! The statistical analyses show that for dementia, depression and personal injury, there is an increased risk in people with hearing deficits, and that this increased risk is not observed in people who have hearing aids.
** It’s important to emphasize that people with hearing aids had the exact same risk assessment as those with no hearing loss at all. The higher risk was only shown for those who chose to not treat their hearing loss. **
Hearing Aids Increase Brain Function
Study carried out by Jamie Desjardins, PhD, a professor in Speech Language Pathology at the University of TX, El Paso
She conducted a study using participants in their 50’s and 60’s with common sloping hearing losses who had never worn hearing aids. Participants were given tests before starting their trial with hearing aids on brain processing speeds, attention span and memory.
After just 2 weeks of wearing hearing aids EVERY participant showed significant improvements in all 3 areas!
