Did you know that the ear is a self cleaning system?
It’s pretty cool! If the system is working properly that is.
Why do we have ear wax?
Great question! Ear wax, or cerumen, is produced in the ear canal, close to the ear drum. Ear wax, with skin cells, slowly but surely migrates out of the ear canal, bringing with it those skin cells and any dust or foreign particles. Ear wax is good! This process of migrating ear wax is how the ear cleans itself, it’s just that sometimes that process doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to.
When should I get my ears cleaned?
If ear wax is not migrating out of your ear the way it’s supposed to, there is a chance it is building up in your ear canal. Wax build up can be very uncomfortable, causing you to feel imbalanced, plugged up, pressure and even artificial hearing loss.
If you believe you have wax build up, you should definitely come in for an ear cleaning!
What about online ear cleaning tools?
We do not recommend putting any type of tool into your ear. The ear canal is very vascular, and your ear drum is very sensitive. It does not take a lot to cause bleeding and pain in this sensitive area, best to leave it to a professional.
Can I use over the counter ear drops to help?
OTC wax softeners such as Debrox can be found at your local pharmacy and for some people do the job. A wax softener can help loosen up hard wax and allow it to leak out of the ear. Some people do best with a combination of OTC wax softeners and professional cleaning. If wax is too hard and impacted, we may need to recommended a patient go home and use such ear drops, to then come back for removal once the cerumen has softened.
How much does ear cleaning cost?
At Hello Hearing Studios your total out of pocket cost will be a maximum of $99 per ear. Sometimes people only need one ear done. In the event that neither ear needs removal, we will charge $50 for the appointment.
